Railroad Man: The Life and Legend of Jay Gould

Airs Tuesday, June 18 at 10 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV);

HARTFORD, Conn. (June 17, 2013) – Nineteenth century entrepreneur Jay Gould redefined the way the world worked with his creation of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Western Union Telegraph Company, yet he was also responsible for one of the worst stock market crashes of all time. Some historians say he was a deceitful “robber baron” who caused great harm, while others think he was merely human.

Airing on Tuesday, June 18 at 10 p.m. on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV), the documentary Railroad Man: The Life and Legend of Jay Gould gives viewers some insight into what this misunderstood character in American history may have really been like.

Born on a farm in rural New York, Gould was determined to follow a different path from his father. He was obsessed with getting an education and by the time he was twenty years old, he had become a surveyor, cartographer, publisher, author, historian and clerk. In 1865, Gould gained control of the Erie Railroad, and in the next decades he was in charge of seventeen major railroads, as well as the creator of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Many referred to him as a financial genius.

Gould’s work can be easily comparable to other entrepreneurs of the time such as Vanderbilt and Rockefeller, however, he never received the appropriate credit because he was portrayed as a back-stabbing devil and an enemy of the working man by the media, who never changed their portrait of him. In reality, Gould opened up travel to the American West, anticipated the need for investment in roads and their placement, and innovated the way corporate law operates on Wall Street today.

The documentary is made possible by Catskill Recreation Area.

Railroad Man: The Life and Legend of Jay Gould is produced by Telemark Films and presented by Connecticut Public Television (CPTV).
