With a little over a week to go before the Connecticut Democratic and Republican primaries on August 14, the CPBN (Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network) Media Lab’s original web series, (I)NTERVIEW, offers a special collection of candidate interviews that present their political positions as well as personal revelations. The series of in-depth interviews allows the candidates to reveal more about their personalities, childhood ambitions, and enthusiasm – items sometimes overlooked in the name of deadline-driven journalism and campaign expediency.

The (I)NTERVIEW online series interviews the following candidates for U.S. Senator:

Chris Shays (R), former Congressman from Connecticut’s 4th district

Chris Murphy (D), Congressman from Connecticut’s 5th district

Susan Bysiewicz (D), former Secretary of State

Repeated requests for an interview with Republican candidate Linda McMahon went unheeded by her campaign office.

“It gives viewers a chance to see what a candidate is like outside the political arena,” said Kirsten Preskenis, one of the CPBN Media Lab producers for the series. “We’re trying to look at the people behind the platforms,” added another producer, Emily Kitching. “It was an honor and privilege to meet three of the four candidates for Connecticut’s open seat in the U.S. Senate,” said Mark Yaworowski, the third producer of the series.

With participation from three of the four Senatorial Candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties, the series provides an informative look into not only their campaigns, but into the lives of the candidates themselves.

Over the course of her interview, Democratic candidate Susan Bysiewicz spoke fondly about her time growing up on her family’s farm in Middletown. She laughed about the process the family went through during the harvest of their potatoes. Democratic candidate Chris Murphy described how his childhood ambitions involved a passion for sports, with baseball being a particular favorite.

During his interview with the CPBN Media Lab, Republican candidate Chris Shays said his secret talent is getting people to work as a team. Susan Bysiewicz said her talent is cooking, and she spoke highly about her ratatouille. Although she lets her husband cook, she prefers to be the one behind the stove. With a wry grin and a chuckle, Chris Murphy revealed some little-known information about his time as the quarterback for Oxford College’s American football team.

The CPBN Media Lab interns, who are undergraduate and postgraduate college students, perform all the tasks in the creation of this original web series, including producing, scheduling, researching, conducting interviews, shooting, editing, and posting. The interviews were shot in HD using a Sony EX-3 camera in the CPBN Media Lab’s Studio B at the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network headquarters, located at 1049 Asylum Avenue, Hartford. Post production is completed using Adobe CS5 and Final Cut Pro. Photographs were taken during each interview with both a Canon Eios Rebel XS and Sony Cybershot still cameras.

“This special series of interviews is part of the Media Lab’s focus on youth vote in the 2012 election season, along with our award-winning youth vote PSA that will be on Comcast this fall.” said Paul Pfeffer, manager of education services, speaking about the CPBN Media Lab. “We are also producing ‘man-on-the-street’ interviews to gauge youth knowledge, involvement and engagement with the upcoming elections. This summer, we have students from Bucknell University, Quinnipiac University, Rutgers University, Stony Brook University, University of Delaware, Valparaiso University, and Wellesley College.”
