CPBN’s Veterans Vocational Training Program Chosen for Newman’s Own Foundation Challenge

Donate Today! The Challenge Ends Monday, November 11

HARTFORD, Conn. (October 1, 2013) – The Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) is proud to announce that it is part of the Newman's Own Foundation's Honoring Those Who Serve Challenge, a fundraising campaign honoring Paul Newman's commitment to helping the military community.

To give back, Newman's Own Foundation will be donating a total of $180,000 to organizations focused on empowering military personnel, veterans and their families. CPBN’s new Veterans Vocational Training Program is one of the organizations that could be awarded financial support.

CPBN's new Learning Lab welcomes veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces to learn skills from the journalism, broadcast and digital media industries through a unique, first-of-its-kind training program.

Newman's Own Foundation will donate $75,000 to the charity that raises the most throughout the Honoring Those Who Serve Challenge. Second place will get $50,000 and third place will get $25,000.

The Newman’s Own Foundation grants, which are being awarded over three years, will help military service organizations across the country that deal with issues such as health, housing, education, career development and family support. When veterans return home, they face vast and complex challenges. According to the Department of Defense, the military suicide rate hit a record high in 2012, increasing nearly 16 percent over the previous year. Over 60,000 veterans are homeless.[1] The unemployment rate for Gulf War-era veterans was 9.9 percent in 2012, compared to 8 percent for all Americans.[2]

To donate, visit CrowdRise.com/CPTV-NOF. The challenge ends Monday, November 11. All financial gifts help CPBN and Newman's Own Foundation put the power of a digital media education and career opportunities into the hands of veterans.

Any questions regarding the Veterans Vocational Training Program can be answered by contacting Donna Sodipo, Director of Education Services at [email protected].
